The stage of the soul

Projecte inspirat en el mite Butades. Butades de Sició va ser un artista llegendari de l’antiga Grècia. Plini el Vell fa referència a aquest mite a la seva Història Natural, XXXV. 43, com l’origen de la pintura, que la relaciona amb l’ombra.

<<(…) passem a la plàstica. La primera obra d’aquest tipus la va fer en argila el terrissaire Butades de Sició, a Corint, sobre una idea de la seva filla, enamorada d’un jove que anava a abandonar la ciutat: la noia va fixar amb línies els contorns del perfil del seu amant sobre la paret a la llum d’una espelma. (…)>>.

El mite de Butades neix de la separació i la por a l’oblit. Detenir el temps que se’ns escapa, pot haver estat l’impuls original del dibuix. Ens obre la possibilitat de quedar-nos amb el record de qui, en un moment o altre, desapareixerà.

Avui en dia tenim molts mitjans per immortalitzar moments, com la fotografia, però, què més bonic que quedar-se amb la seva ombra, amb la seva ànima? Amb l’absència del cos però amb la presència de la seva projecció. I que millor que convertir-les en joies per gaudir-les i sentir-les a prop teu.

L’ombra és immaterial com són els records. Amb la llum, també intangible, actives el record, fent present el que està absent, fent l’acte de recordar.

Project inspired by the myth of Butades of Sicyon, who was a legendary artist from ancient Greece. Pliny the Elder refers to this myth in The Natural History, XXXV: 43, as the origin of painting, which he connects with shade.

“(…) but it will be only proper to append some accounts of the plastic art. Butades, a potter of Sicyon, was the first who invented, at Corinth, the art of modelling portraits in the earth (…) It was through his daughter that he made the discovery; who, being deeply in love with a young man about to depart on a long journey, traced the profile of his face, as thrown upon the wall by the light of the lamp”.

The myth of Butades is born of separation and fear of oblivion. Holding back the time that slips away might have been the original impulse of drawing. This gives us the possibility of keeping the memory of whom, at one time or another will disappear.

Nowadays we have means to immortalise moments, such as photography, but is there something nicer than keeping the shade or the soul of a moment or the absence of a body but with the presence of its projection? And what better than turning these into jewels to enjoy and feel them close to you.

Shade is intangible, such as memories. With light, also intangible, you activate memories, making present what is absent, making you look back.
